Known to many golfers as the ‘Beast of Samui’

Santiburi Samui County Club is the only full-size golf course in Koh Samui and is designed to blend in perfectly with the harmony of the mountainside. Santiburi golf course is an 18-hole championship course and became recognized during the 1st Asian Tour golf event held back in 2005. Golf tournaments continued to be organized annually until the year 2017, the golf course still remains open to the public and continues to attract golfers worldwide.

Santiburi golf course Koh Samui is one of Thailand’s unique golf courses, constructed on the mountain slopes of Maenam and offers exceptional views of Koh Phanghan Island, in the Gulf of Thailand. Playing golf at Santiburi presents golfers with many notable challenges or distractions during the round, these include incredible changes in elevation, spectacular tropical scenery, and the backdrop of the ocean.
Spectators are welcome to join you, as long as there are no more than 5 people in the group.

Playing each hole presents you with a carefully planned approach, forests of coconut trees either side of the fairway, thick jungle and rocks laden every hole, there isn’t much margin of error, however if you play safe you will be richly rewarded.

The course rewards players that are more accurate rather than long. During the round you encounter many changes in elevation continually throwing doubt into every shot. The constant threat of miss judging distances always a concern, even the greens are tricky to read having to contend with multiple slopes and very grainy.

Wind conditions play a major factor here at Santiburi Samui depending on the time of the year, at times changing direction several time while addressing the ball.
The back nine can be brutal, the final two holes sometimes determining whether you finish the round with a respectable score or not.

Hole 17 a par 5 is a perfect example of every difficultly to contend with during your round. Blind tee shot to start, caddy points out a coconut tree to aim for, once you clear the brow of the hill its downhill all the way, dense jungle either side of the fairway. Playing the perfect drive requires a kind roll hopefully ending up short of the rocky creek. If you’ve followed the caddy’s instructions and had a slice of luck, you have the perfect opportunity of reaching the green in two. The sharp dog leg to the left requires aiming over trees, the green surrounded by several bunkers and jungle.

The resilient Sea Isle Paspalum grass has been used for the tees and fairways, ensuring good playing conditions annually and the Tifeagle laid greens roll quickly.

Santiburi golf course meets International standards, four different tee boxes allow every handicapper to take more enjoyment from the game. It must rank as the most beautiful golf course in Thailand, one of the toughest, however if played sensibly don’t be surprised scoring well.

The caddies are dressed in pink are extremely course knowledgeable and are enormous fun to be with during the round. Santiburi caddies are girls and a large percentage come from the northern areas of Thailand to find work and live in lodgings supplied by the course.

After completing the round there’s nothing more rewarding than sitting in Santiburi golf club restaurant with a drink, enjoying the cool breeze and total relaxation.

From the terrace acres of coconut plantations and other tropical fruits on view, further to the north, a clear, impressive not interrupted view of Koh Phanghan and to the north east Bangrak bay and Choengmon.

Eating at the restaurant represents excellent value and is well known for its special Thai dishes, if you play in the afternoon look out for the happy hours on various drinks offered late, the jugs of Singha Beer always go down well!

The changing rooms boast a first class private shower area and locker room, all facilities making you feel clean and fresh at the end of your round. The pro shop is well stocked with all the necessary equipment, golf balls, gloves, tees, logo shirts and golf course memorabilia available to purchase at the counter.

SANTIBURI SAMUI COUNTRY CLUB

Front Nine

Holes 1 to 9

1) THE FLAT LAND
This is Santiburi Samui’s starting hole. You have perhaps the best opportunity for par or birdie here. Keep your tee shot on the right side of the fairway, the longer hitters can the go for the green…!

2) BREATHE
When you reach the tee box and admire the view, you can put the big stick away though. Distance is not a factor here. Take a deep breath, as you aim for the left center of the fairway. That will leave you with a good angle to the flag with your short approach shot. Careful not to over-club here!

3) THE RISE
A long tee shot would be to your advantage here. Drive over the splash of the bunkers on the left side of the rising fairway. That would give you the chance for a lofted iron on the approach to a severely elevated and shallow green, guarded both front and back bunkers. Par is a good score here.

4) THE RAVINE
This par three is not long. However, the green has no room for error on three sides. A well-placed tee shot that favours the left side of the green, will avoid the surrounding ravine, this is your best shot.

5) THE ROCK
Your drive needs to carry a ravine in front of the tee, and then carry the peak of a huge rock. Hit the “Big Driver”. If you make the fairway, breathe a sigh of relief and then take a steady stance for the approach. The fairway has many curves, making an easy approach difficult to a tiered green.

6) THE WATERFALL
The view from the tee lets you see it all. Wow! This is a short par three that drops some 40 meters in elevation. The back of the green is a natural waterfall. Play for the middle of the green, if you want to par, and then…Enjoy one of golf’s rare lucky finds. “The Waterfall”

7) THE PLATEAU
Play begins on a plateau literally sculpted out of the mountainside. Place your tee shot just left of the fairway bunker. That will leave you with a short iron to attack the flag. Just the right distance will set up an easy birdie.

8) THE PALM
The fairway is split by a few palms framing the bunkers. Takr the left side and you remove the risk of making a big number, out of the equation. This short par 4 has a small green, well guarded with bunkers.

9) THE RESERVOIR
Take the driver here. Your tee shot will seemingly soar from the elevated tee over the 30 meters tall coconut trees. This hole is downhill all the way. The reservoir guards the hole and the left pin will test your nerve, the safe shot is the right center of this fair green.

Back Nine

Holes 10 to 18

10) THE CLIMB
You should play safe off the tee, as a good position for your approach is a must. A mid to long iron or your straightest 3 wood will leave you an interesting shot to the green. Once on th green, the real challenge begins. The two tier green might be easier to negotiate if you hit the right tier coming in. Going up!

11) THE CLIFFS
This dogleg par 4 is against an uphill climb. The green is narrow and perhaps 5 clubs long. I recommend you take aim to the right of the pin and hit one more club than expected. Left of the green, you will notice a long fall. Don’t go there without your climbing gear!

12) MOUNTAIN VIEW
This par 3 is a beauty with a whole mountain for a backdrop. A medium to long iron must stay on line here. Hit to the left side of this mid-sized green. Enjoy the scenery!

13) THE LANDING
From the tee, you will be wondering what to do. With trouble front. right and long, you have only one choice. Down the middle or left side. At least the mountain has gravity working for you. Your approach should be the same but uphill slightly and may warrant an extra club.

14) THE LONG FADE
Play this long iron from left to right, avoiding the left hand bunker and feeding the ball to the whole. Use a club that will ease you to the front of the green as hitting past middle will put you over the back. A fair but testing par 3.

15) HIDDEN HOLLOWS
Aim for the left side of the fairway on your tee shot. Anything right will either be in the bunkers or the tree below. A lot of thought here to be put into your second. The brave may try to carry the hidden hollows to leave an easy pitch to the green. The green is a narrow landing area, at best and there is no real estate to the right.

16) VERTIGO
Depending on the prevailing winds, you may love this hole or hate it. Your tee shot will carry the ridge and run way down the fairway, leaving you a short approach to this nearby unguarded green. However, into the monsoon winds, you are looking at two drivers at least. The backdrop is gorgeous here as the views from the hill blends into the ocean afar!

17) THE SUMMIT & THE SIGNATURE
Your tee shot must avoid the cliffs along the right side of the fairway. Somewhat of a blind tee shot as well, the right side is the safest. As you reach the summit from the cart path, the hole displays a panoramic view of neighboring islands and bays. The big hitters will hope for a level lie and a chance to go for the green in two. Al that stands in their way is 250 yards (downhill) over jungle. Who wouldn’t go for it. The rest of us will be happy with a par for “The Signature”.

18) DOWN HOME
Your shot from the elevated tee seems to hang in mid-air as it falls 50 meters below. Steer clear of the right side as it drops off into thick rain-forest like vegetation. Your approach continues the descent all the way to the bottom. The green is guarded both right and back with sand. Two putts for par, sign the card and relish the experience!
